Dr. Horrible!!!! If you haven't seen it, go to http://www.drhorrible.com/ immediately and watch Act 1 of Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible and the Sing-Along Blog. It stars Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion and is utterly hilarious. Act II will be up on the 17th and III on the 19th and if you don't watch the clips now you'll have to wait until they come out on DVD. | | Friday, June 13th, 2008 | | 1:51 pm |
Friday the 13th, what? I was on my bike earlier, heading up to the library to drop off some books and pick up my reserves. My luggage had gotten wet thanks to stoopid airport attendants in Orlando and two of my library books had water damage. That's a nice $28 down the drain. Anyway, I stopped at one point to grab a drink of water from the bottle i keep in my backpack (HOT today) and saw something you don't see every day. There was a couple in the river, making out. At least that's what i assume they were doing--they were fully clothed but all entangled, and the guy looked like he was trying to practically bite into her neck. They were moaning a lot. I yelled out that they should get a room, and the guy looked up at me and made motions like he was going to head in my direction, but i was back on the bike and heading toward the library. They were gone on the way back, thankfully. I get that people want to do odd things (like public exhibitionism) on Friday the 13th, but that doesn't mean i need to witness it. Campus was deserted today. Not even any ducks in Mirror Lake, just a few random white feathers. Some of those had some brownish goo on them which was pretty disgusting. I can understand why they'd be shedding though--its pretty hot out. Some of the people i've seen have just been kinda shambling about in the heat, wandering aimlessly. I think if i was forced to walk outside i'd be doing the same thing, though i'd probably just wear fewer clothes rather than rip mine up the way they have. Ah well. I'd better head home--lots to do! gakked from yrmencyn Yay accuracy! New Jerseyan without the full accent? Sounds about right! </form> Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).
If you are not from the North, you are probably one of the following: (a) A Southerner who hates Southern accents and tries really hard to "talk right"; or (b) A New Yorker or New Jerseyan who doesn't have the full accent Take this quiz now - it's easy! | | Thursday, May 8th, 2008 | | 4:41 pm |
Tal's issues with her phone, take 36.8 Guess who's phone is dead again? That's right, mine. Three guesses why?
If you guess anything other than 'it got wet, somehow' you don't know me well enough.
I've been putting off a relatively simple errand--fetch my new contact from my eye doctor, located not that far away. I decided for whatever reason it had to be done today, despite the light rain outside. I also decided that i had to bike there as its very close and the temperature is quite nice. I like summer rain, so i put on my rain jacket and headed out.
The only problem is that the light rain became very not-light rather quickly.
So now i'm home, sitting at my computer in a towel with my hair dripping on me. All my clothes--jacket, shirt, jeans, bra, long socks, sneakers, underwear--are sopping wet in the bathtub. And my phone which for some reason i decided to bring with me, which was in my jacket pocket...yeah, soaked and most definitely in the 'off' position. So if you were going to call me...email or get on Skype.
*Sigh*
The only good thing is that, knowing my nature, i demanded water insurance on the thing. So it won't cost me too much to replace it.
If anyone wants to buy me one of those waterproof phones for my birthday, i wouldn't object :) | | 9:39 am |

What are YOU doing next Saturday? If you are in the cbus area then you should be at the 2008 OSU Medieval and Renaissance Faire! Sword-fighting! Dancing! Singing! Juggling! Turkey Legs! Music! Leather goods! Human Combat Chess! What's not to love? This year's theme is King Arthur, focusing on the 'Sword in the Stone' part of the story. Plus, don't miss Minstrelry, performing at the Grove stage at 12, 2, and 330! I promise the show will provide you with some serious blackmail material... The faire will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 3rd from 11-6 on the South Oval of Ohio State's campus (that's at 12th and college). Admission is free! Hope to see many of you there! Responding to questions... From spc_andy (who lives in the UK)
Do you think there is any hope for America or is it just going to drag the rest of us English speaking countries down with it?
Heavy I know but it came from a conversation in the pub last night, a good few friends of mine will not even go to visit America while Bush is still in power. I don't really do politics so I was kinda taken a back to discover this.
In short, yes, I do think there is hope. Remember that only about 25% of Americans actually voted for Bush: half of the 50% who bothered to vote in 2000. The number who would do say today is precipitously lower. Bush is fully in lame duck mode, a figure largely targeted with scorn or at best disinterest by most Americans. His approval rating is between 30-32%-to give some perspective, that's just a bit higher than President Nixon's were when he resigned in disgrace (about 27%--but their disapproval ratings are currently about the same). This compares to his 90% approval rating right after 9/11.
The change really came with Hurricane Katrina. The total ineptitude of government response at all levels, and the willingness of the media to take them to task for it, really changed things. Bush saying that his head of FEMA, the emergency management response agency, was 'doing a heckuva job' while people were dying in overcrowded shelters really revealed how out of touch he was. The ongoing war in Iraq (which originally was promised to last '6 days, 6 weeks, i doubt 6 months' by our former Defense Secretary) and the lack of an overt domestic terrorist threat has created a large anti-war sentiment that didn't really exist back in 2003--except for those who knew better at the time (including, by the way, most political scientists).
More hope is provided by a reinvigorated political process during the current primary season. Turn out in the primaries has broken records all over the country, and the messages by the leading candidates for the presidency is one of change and of fixing the wrongs of the Bush Administration. At least, that's the case on the Democratic side of the debate (the Republican candidate, John McCain, is actually fairly liberal on some issues but has shown a willingness to compromise his beliefs and side with the president in order to satisfy the conservative wing of his party).
I can tell you that there is a lot of excitement over here, and a palpable energy directed toward change and undoing the wrongs of the last 8 years. One very visible sign of that hope is that the two people contending for the Democratic Party's nomination are a woman and a black man. Change is coming, and hope is returning. Why not? i like jumping off bridges. Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on lima beans, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, life choices, etc. I reserve the right to filter appropriately. Stolen from, by now, a ridiculous number of people. Current Mood: procrastinatory | | Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 | | 6:54 pm |

Once more, with answers! Apparently i picked either some obscure movies or some obscure quotes. I deliberately avoided quotes that would easily identify the movie in some cases, perhaps to the detriment of would-be guessers! Here are the answers... 1. There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus? One of my favorite quotes from easily my favorite romantic comedy, Love Actually.
2. We are each of an unsocial, taciturn disposition, unwilling to speak unless we expect to say something that will amaze the whole room. From the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (hey, TV movies count!) Not my favorite quote by any means, but it is directly from the book.
3. I'm a god. I'm not *the* God... I don't think. As several guessed, this is from Groundhog Day.
4. A bit of musicality, please! Ah, Strictly Ballroom. How I love thee.
5. I'm right on top of that, Rose. This is an oft-repeated quote by myself and the bro from Don't Tell Mom...the Babysitter's Dead!
6. You've got an overdeveloped sense of vengeance. It's going to get you into trouble someday. I can quote pretty much this entire movie. This is less obvious than 'As you wish' or 'Have fun storming the castle!" but Princess Bride had to be represented.
7. Hey, I'm a reasonable guy. But I've just experienced some very unreasonable things. One of the less memorable lines from Jack Burton in Big Trouble and Little China. Have I mentioned i'm very fond of 80s movies?
8. Give him a hand, he's British! Can't help but choose movies with Alan Rickman, my favorite actor. He's the subject of this quote from Galaxy Quest.
9. You dwell in darkness without me, and it went away?! Best quote ever, from Willow.
10. Everything. OK! I'll talk! In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max's toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog... When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I got nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out... But the worst thing I ever done - I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa - and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.
-Thought this was the easiest quote in the bunch...at least to anyone who has ever seen Goonies. | | Monday, March 3rd, 2008 | | 5:00 pm |
Stolen from cheerybeggar Movie meme Because everyone likes movies! 1. Pick 10 of your favorite movies. 2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie. 3. Post them here for everyone to guess. Now...guess mine! 1. There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus? 2. We are each of an unsocial, taciturn disposition, unwilling to speak unless we expect to say something that will amaze the whole room. 3. I'm a god. I'm not *the* God... I don't think. 4. But I've just experienced some very unreasonable things. 8. Give him a hand, he's British! 9. You dwell in darkness without me, and it went away?! 10. Everything. OK! I'll talk! Its times like this when i REALLY miss my digital camera... When i'm in the bathroom, Xena has a habit of coming in and jumping in the bathtub. I'm not really sure why, its just her thing. And its kind of amazing that this has never happened before, but today i was brushing my teeth and she came in and jumped in the bathtub as usual....which was filled with hot, soapy water. Needless to say she scrambled right out, drenched, and got water everywhere until i could chase her down with a towel. Now she's sitting in her favorite shoebox, grooming herself. Good thing the bubbles were raspberry flavored! Current Mood: amused | | Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 | | 11:24 am |
Mom is SOOOO annoying! The mom in question being me, of course. Ever since Xena's illness, i get stupidly pleased by the smallest things she does. I mean things like eating, drinking, and grooming--these are all signs of healthy behavior, so it makes me happy to see her behaving like a healthy cat. (side note: as i'm writing this, Draco has become fascinated with the corner of the magazine he's sitting on. He keeps thumbing through the corner with one paw, like he's trying to work one of those flip books that you have to flip really fast to see the story.) Anyway, recently i had to get rid of the cat fountain and they are back to a simple water dish. I just went into the kitchen to get some tea, and Xena was in there sipping some water. I immediately launch into the Kitten Voice (if you've never heard it, countless friends of mine ( dacrobat in particular, though others such as snabe and X use it themselves) will tell you to count your blessings, as it is high pitched, cutesy, and involves lots of cooing, talking about eating your pets, and speaking in the third person) and say to Xena: "ohhhhhh...are you drinking? Are you enjoying your water? Did mommy give you some good water to drink?" and she stops drinking, and just LOOKS at me over her shoulder. You know the look i'm talking about. Its the one that says: "well, i WAS enjoying myself until some annoying twit came over and interrupted me. Go away now,k? thnxbye." It was really funny. It took place mere moments after Draco walked up to her, started licking her butt, and she promptly sat down so he couldn't reach. Soooo cute! I think i need to go pet her now.
